Mariya + Oshin’s modern South Indian Catholic wedding in Rome

Both originally from Kerala but now based in Houston, Marita and Oshin combined their South Indian Catholic roots with a modern Western upbringing, for an Italian wedding that was entirely their own.

Between lost luggage, a cheering Roman crowd outside the church and an outdoor reception that turned into an unexpectedly perfect indoor Plan B, their celebration became a reminder that the most beautiful moments are often the ones you don’t plan for at all.

Love Story

“We are both originally from Kerala, a small state on the southern tip of India. Both of our families moved to Houston, Texas during our childhood, and it remains our home.”

“We met at a small coffee shop during summer break. Oshin was deep into studying for his medical licensing exams, and I was working on my medical school applications. He offered to help me with mine, and I gladly accepted. Somehow, our first conversation quickly drifted away from applications, and we found ourselves on a beautiful first date. The rest is history.”

The Engagement

“Our proposal was quite the adventure. We flew into Italy for a ski trip to the Dolomites. Alas, while we made the trip safely to Italy, our luggage did not. We found ourselves in a new country with nothing but each other, the clothes on our backs, and a ring hidden in Oshin’s pocket. This started a few days scramble of purchasing new clothes, toiletries, and luggage for the trip.

Despite the chaos, Oshin proposed on December 18th. He had planned an unforgettable moment at the summit of Piz Boè. He reserved a restaurant and filled it with fresh pink rose petals, candles, and shared the most heartfelt words with me. It was a truly breathtaking experience.”

“Facing a tough few days waiting to see if our luggage would come, changing plans last minute, and still enjoying every moment of it together really cemented the fact that she was who I want by my side for every adventure moving forward.” ~ Oshin

Why Italy?

“After getting engaged in Corvara, Italy always held a special place in our hearts. At first, getting married in Italy seemed too far fetched of a choice. But as we thought more about it, our families are spread all over the world and bringing them together to experience the magic of Italy just felt right.”

The Venue

“We wanted a stunning villa that was convenient for our guests to reach. Choosing a venue in Rome not only made it accessible but also gave our guests plenty to explore and enjoy.”

Stand Out Moment

“Our private vows were a memorable moment of calm in the midst of all the excitement. Also, stepping out of the church after our ceremony to a huge cheering crowd was unforgettable. We felt like celebrities!”

The Style

“I drew inspiration from early 2000s Indian fashion and classic European bridal couture.”

The Dream Team

“If possible, hire your vendors directly. We chose each vendor with much deliberation and intention from all over the world- Italy, Switzerland, South Africa, and the US. Each of them far surpassed our expectations and we could not have been blessed with a better team.”

Advice For Couples

“Make it a point to have the best day ever and seek joy throughout the day. It takes intention to be truly present in the day. After months of planning every detail, today is about just being fully present. You can only control so much, and what matters far more than everything going perfectly is savoring the moments with your partner and loved ones.”
