Why wedding insurance is a must

In the current global landscape, insurance is more important than ever. This is not the time to leave anything to chance. Although wedding insurance doesn’t protect every aspect of planning, increasing your odds is well worth it.

As soon as you start paying deposits you should have insurance, but don’t forget a strong vendor contract is equally as important. And even more so if wedding insurance isn’t available to you.

Typical insurance policies cover

  • Cancellation or postponement (illness, emergencies)

  • Loss/damage (rings, dress, gifts, décor)

  • Vendor issues (bankruptcy, no-show)

  • Liability (injury or property damage during the event)

Which insurance should you get?

We recommend you have both wedding and travel insurance.

Wedding insurance → covers the event itself

Travel insurance → covers flights, cancellations, medical, etc.

Wedding policies usually do NOT cover travel or honeymoon

What does a good policy look like?

Essential cover

  • Cancellation / postponement

    • illness, accidents, extreme events

  • Public liability

    • especially for villas, castles, outdoor weddings

  • Vendor failure

    • common risk with destination vendors

Strongly recommended add-ons

  • Weather disruption (especially outdoor weddings)

  • Legal expenses / liability disputes

  • Lost or damaged attire & rings

Check exclusions carefully

Policies often exclude:

  • Known risks (e.g. pandemics already declared)

  • Some extreme weather scenarios

  • Certain countries or regions

  • Travel issues

If insurance is not available to you

Ensure you’re following the below due diligence throughout planning.

  • Venue contract

    • Cancellation clauses from either side

    • Liability insurance

    • Any clauses that you need liability insurance

  • Vendor contracts

    • Robust and detailed, especially around cancellation clauses, like your venue flooding. Contracts should state your refunds in these circumstances

    • Deposit should be refundable, minus any hours already worked or services already provided. A fully non-refundable date-holding deposit is not legal

    • Pay for vendors through a secure bank platform like Wise. Wise is recommended by La Lista, use our referral link below for a free first transfer up to £1,000 (or equivalent in your currency)

    • Policy on replacement vendors if they can’t attend

    • Notice period on cancelling

    • Refund policy if cancelled

    • Refund policy if agreed contract isn’t fulfilled

  • Travel insurance

Other insurance to consider

  • Travel insurance

  • Gadget insurance

  • Car insurance - we recommend you consider insurance which covers hire cars for 12 months, it’s the most efficient way to cover your trips and the wedding itself. On an insurance document you want ‘car hire excess insurance’, meaning if you have an accident you’re not liable for the excess as standard
