Easy ways to reduce your wedding businesses’ environmental impact

Like us, you’re probably home-based at the minute and raring to get back to weddings. It’s fair to say it hasn’t been the positive start to the year we had all hoped for -but all we can do is take one day at a time and do our best to make our businesses better than ever when we reopen our doors (in hopefully, the not too distant future!)

When it comes to making sustainable changes within our businesses, it can often feel overwhelming and difficult to know where to start. Here are some small everyday changes we can make that will all add up to reduce our environmental impact.

Here are our top 8 tweaks that don’t break the bank and help save the planet:

1. Recycle as much waste material as possible.

It’s so simple but scrap paper, turn it into your notebook. Spare packaging, save it up and use it again.

2. Go paperless wherever possible.

All invoices, contracts and quotes can be sent via email as PDF files. Ask your clients to return them electronically too.

3. Use energy-saving lightbulbs in your office and at home.

Energy-saving light bulbs use less energy, and therefore reduce the carbon footprint of your home or workspace. And, crucially, using less energy means paying less for your bills. It’s a win for the environment and a win for your wallet.

4. Use a sustainable energy supplier for your energy at home.

They often have more competitive rates than the biggest brands!

5. Purchase products that are made from recycled materials or buy second-hand.

Whether that’s gifts for clients or props for weddings – the pre-loved stuff means so much more.

6. Use low-impact, plant-based cleaning products at home and at work.

We’re all using more of these now (for obvious reasons!) but there are so many innovative eco-alternatives on the market. Why not try Ocean Saver cleaning products or Ecoegg for your laundry; both offer plastic-free and plant-based ways of doing things.

7. Offset your carbon footprint.

If you’re flying to Italy, consider balancing it out by carbon offsetting. This is by no means 100% ideal but it is much better than nothing! There are so many great causes that you can support, from clean energy schemes to reforestation initiatives that will go some way to offset the impact of your trip. At La Lista, we are working with the World Land Trust to buy, protect and manage ancient forests around the world through local groups. We believe this is the best way to reduce carbon in our atmosphere and ensure the diversity of our planet is maintained.

8. Switch to glass bottles.

If you’re a venue or caterer could you offer guests glass bottled water instead of plastic? La Lista member Villa il Pozzo (link to profile page) offers glass bottled water to guests at the cost of plastic bottled water from the supermarket. This means there is little to no plastic on-site at the end of the day and all of the glass bottles can be recycled.

Why not pick one small change to make today and together we can make a difference!
